Alumna Receives CLD Outstanding Researcher Award

The Council for Learning Disabilities awarded its Outstanding Researcher Award to Anne Eichorn Brawand (PhD Education '13), an alumna of George Mason University.

The prestigious national award recognizes an outstanding doctoral dissertation in the field of learning disabilities.

Dr. Brawand earned a PhD in Education with a specialization in Special Education from George Mason University. The title of her dissertation is "Proportional Reasoning Word Problem Performance for Middle School Students with High-Incidence Disabilities (HID)." On her dissertation committee were professors Peggy King-Sears (chair), Anya Evmenova, and Kelley Regan.

While at Mason, Brawand was the recipient of a PhD Special Education Leadership Grant, which provides full tuition support. The principal investigators for the federally funded doctoral grant are professors Peggy King-Sears, Rick Brigham, and Pam Baker.

"I've known Anne for quite some time and was her advisor when she earned her master's degree in special education from Johns Hopkins University," said Professor King-Sears. "That the Council for Learning Disabilities has selected Anne for this award, for which there is strong competition, is further evidence that she sets and accomplishes high standards for herself." 

Dr. Brawand is currently an assistant professor in the special education department at Kutztown University. Prior to beginning her career in higher education, Dr. Brawand spent 12 years teaching both general and special education students at the elementary and middle school level in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
