Erin Peters Burton Receives 2012 CEHD Scholarly Achievement Award

December 9, 1999

Congratulations to Erin Peters Burton, assistant professor in the Graduate School of Education, for receiving the 2012 CEHD Scholarly Achievement Award.

The award, now in its third year, is presented to a faculty member of the College of Education & Human Development at George Mason University in recognition of outstanding scholarship.

Peters Burton's work includes studies of inclusive science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in high schools in the U.S. to determine what critical components are necessary to support underrepresented students in STEM learning.

She was previously honored by George Mason University as an Emerging Researcher Award Finalist (2011) and by the National Association for Research in Science Teaching with an Outstanding Doctoral Research Award, Honorable Mention (2009). In 2005, Peters Burton was selected as an Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow for NASA where she advised the agency in their development of curriculum for teachers and was also chosen to be part of the committee developing the country's first K-12 National Engineering Standards. Her experience as an engineer and a secondary science teacher helps her relate research to practice in science and engineering education.

Erin Peters Burton will present the keynote address at the 2013 CEHD Research Symposium.

Past recipients of the award include University Professor of Special Education Tom Scruggs (2010) and Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education Julie Kidd  (2011).
