Dean Ginsberg Hosts the 2013 Bammy Awards at Arena Stage

September 27, 2013

A red carpet, golden statuette, black tie and gowns, and glittery after party were all part of the 2013 Bammy Awards co-hosted by Dean Ginsberg on Saturday.

The gala event by the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences International is when educators are treated like rocks stars as part of a celebration of "what's right in American education." Held at Arena Stage at the Mead Theater in Washington, DC, on September 21, 2013, the Bammy Awards takes its cue from the entertainment industry by identifying and honoring the exemplary work being done across the education field. Among the honorees each year are teachers, principals, superintendents, school nurses, support staff, advocates, researchers, school custodians, early childhood specialists, education journalists, and parents.

Nancy Carlsson-Paige (left), professor emerita at Lesley University and recipient of many honors for advocacy of early childhood and peace education, received a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The awards are co-hosted by Dr. Mark Ginsberg, dean of the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University, and Errol St. Clair Smith, Emmy-winning correspondent and executive producer of the Bammy Awards.

This year's celebration included: Dennis Van Roekel, president of the National Education Association; Dan Domenech, executive director of the American Association of School Administrators; A. Blaine Hawley, president of the National Association of Elementary School Principals; Rhian Evans, executive director for the National Association for the Education of Young Children; John Merrow, award-winning education reporter at PBS; Donna Mazyck, executive director of the National Association of School Nurses; Andrew Ko, general manager of Microsoft Education; Caroline Hendrie, executive director of the Education Writers Association; Laura Bay, president-elect of the National PTA; Alicia Levi, director, PBS Learning Media; Brian Lewis, CEO of the International Society for Technology in Education; educators from Sandy Hook Elementary, and the BAM 100 connected educators.
