CEHD Appoints 13 New Faculty Members

Dean Mark Ginsberg announced yesterday the appointment of 13 new faculty members to the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at George Mason University.

"This outstanding group will bring important experience and expertise to CEHD as we continue to evolve into one of the nation's premier colleges," said Ginsberg at the opening session for CEHD faculty and staff. "Please join me in welcoming these scholars, practitioners, and leaders to the CEHD community."

The new faculty members reflect a mix of tenure-track and term faculty representing five of the college's eight academic divisions. They are:


Division of Advanced Professional Teacher Development and International Education

Director: Professor Beverly Shaklee

  • Eirini Gouleta

    Eirini Gouleta
    Eirini Gouleta joins CEHD as an associate professor of education with the FAST TRAIN program. Her scholarly interests are focused on English as a Second Language, international, bilingual, and special education. She received a second master's degree in counseling and development from George Mason University and an EdD in bilingual special education from George Washington University. She was previously the Pakistan senior education adviser and team leader for the UK Department for International Development, an assistant professor at Trinity University, and a teacher in Arlington County Public Schools. Gouleta is a former Fulbright Memorial Fund Scholar, served as regional director for Virginia and Washington D.C. for Phi Delta Kappa International, and is currently associate editor of the National Association for Bilingual Education's Perspectives.

  • April Mattix

    April Mattix
    April Mattix joins CEHD as an assistant professor of education with the FAST TRAIN program. She earned her PhD in language, literacy, and culture from the University of Pittsburgh and also holds master's degrees in both teaching and international affairs. Mattix taught at the International School of Amsterdam, Golden Door Charter School of Jersey City, the Anglo-American School of Moscow, and the Ellis School of Pittsburgh before becoming a teaching fellow at the University of Pittsburgh. While earning her doctoral degree, she served as the assistant director of the university's Reading Center as well as graduate student president for the School of Education and was recently awarded the School of Education Leadership Award. Mattix currently serves as the co-editor of the Association for Childhood Education International's Focus on Elementary quarterly, and is a reviewer for a number of academic journals.  

  • Barbara Wood

    Barbara Wood
    Barbara Wood joins CEHD as an assistant professor of education with the Mathematics Education Leadership program. Most recently she was a Math Solutions consultant with Marilyn Burns and a curriculum and professional development specialist for K-8 math, science, and technology. Wood has more than 25 years of experience as an elementary and middle school teacher in Washington state as well as a learning support specialist in London. She received a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Washington and a master's degree in science education from Western Washington University. Wood was recently appointed to the editorial panel for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics publication, Students Exploring Mathematics.



Division of Educational Psychology, Research Methods, and Education Policy

Director: Professor Anastasia Kitsantas

  • Lori Bland

    Lori Bland
    Lori Bland joins CEHD as an associate professor with the Educational Psychology program, and is responsible for the Data-Driven Decision-Making graduate certificate program. Most recently, she was an associate clinical professor and one of the directors at the Center for Gifted Education at the College of William and Mary. She was also the director of the Project Clarion grant, a K-3 science curriculum development grant and is currently a consultant on a STEM grant at Western Kentucky University. Bland was recently elected as chair of the professional development network of the National Association for Gifted Children and serves as the editor for the network's newsletter. Prior to entering higher education, she was director for test development and an area director for Pearson/National Evaluation Systems for teacher certification and licensure examinations. She was also the supervisor of testing in Prince William County Public Schools and a research and program evaluation specialist for Fairfax County Public Schools.  She started her career in education as an elementary school teacher in the Alexandria City Public Schools and the Arlington Diocesan Schools.   Bland received her MEd and PhD from the University of Virginia in educational psychology.

  • Angela Miller

    Angela Miller
    Angela Miller joins CEHD as an assistant professor in the Research Methodology program. Her expertise is in the area of applied statistical analyses.  She received her PhD in mathematical statistics and educational psychology from the University of Missouri.  Miller was previously a research assistant professor at the Lifespan Institute where she advised principal investigators on design issues, conducted statistical analyses and power analyses, and was also a frequent writer and statistical consultant on grant projects.  Her areas of specialization are multilevel modeling and structural equation modeling.  She has experience with large scale databases as well as handling data analysis issues with small specialized samples. Her principal authored publications and book chapters focus on statistical applications in the area of educational psychology.  Her primary interests are in classroom motivation and the complexity of student perceptions of teacher behaviors in the classroom.


Division of Elementary, Literacy, and Secondary Education

Director: Professor Elizabeth Sturtevant

  • Pamela Bailey

    Pamela Bailey
    Pamela Bailey joins CEHD as an instructor in the Mathematics Education Leadership program. She was previously an adjunct instructor at George Mason University as well as a grant facilitator and adjunct at the University of Virginia. The secondary mathematics coordinator for Spotsylvania County Public Schools since 2006, Bailey is currently a doctoral candidate at Mason. She is also a board member of the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics and a frequent presenter on mathematics content and pedagogy.

  • Jennifer Drake Patrick

    Jennifer Drake Patrick
    Jennifer Drake Patrick joins CEHD as an assistant professor of education with the Literacy and Reading program. Her research interests include disciplinary literacy and professional development. Drake Patrick received her master's degree in reading education from Miami University and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida where she received the Outstanding Graduate Research Award. She has taught middle school reading as well as high school, worked for Johns Hopkins University as a mentor-liaison with the Center for Reading Excellence, and is also a military spouse.


Division of Health and Human Performance

Director: Associate Professor Dominique Banville

  • Benjamin Goerger

    Benjamin Goerger
    Benjamin Goerger joins CEHD as an assistant professor in the Athletic Training Education program. His scholarly interests include lower extremity injury prevention of physically active individuals with particular interest in how prior ACL injury alters function and influences risk for subsequent injury. Goerger received a PhD in human movement science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

  • Nancy Jacobson

    Nancy Jacobson
    Nancy Jacobson joins CEHD as coordinator of the Physical Activity for Lifetime Wellness program and as an instructor in that program. Previously she was an adjunct professor in fitness and wellness at Northern Virginia Community College and was also a physical education teacher in Prince William County Schools. She has more than 17 years of experience in fitness and recreation, with positions at several military bases. Jacobson has a master's degree in sports medicine and sports fitness from the United States Sports Academy and is a certified health and fitness director by the American College of Sports Medicine.

  • Joel Martin

    Joel Martin
    Joel Martin joins CEHD as an assistant professor in the Kinesiology program. He received a PhD in kinesiology from Pennsylvania State University as well as two master's degrees, in kinesiology and in mechanical engineering. His scholarly interests are in the biomechanics and motor control of tasks in which the output of multiple elements must be coordinated to perform the task.  More specifically his interests are related to the performance of sport movements.  Martin is the founder of Rx Movement, LLC, a consultant company that provides biomechanical data to athletes and coaches to improve performance.


Division of Individual and Organizational Transformation

Director: Associate Professor Scott Bauer

  • Regina Biggs

    Regina Biggs
    Regina Biggs joins CEHD as an assistant professor of education in the Education Leadership program. As a founding partner and CEO of an educational consulting firm, she used her expertise in addressing organizational improvement priorities to stimulate student outcomes in Chicago, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and Baton Rouge.  Previously, she served as an assistant superintendent for Hazel Crest School District in Illinois and served close to 20 years in the Chicago Public Schools as an elementary and high school teacher, and thereafter as a district administrator.  Her primary research interest targets metacognitive leadership practices.  Biggs received a PhD in education leadership and policy studies from Loyola University Chicago.

  • Adrienne Douglass

    Adrienne Douglass
    Adrienne Douglass joins CEHD as an assistant professor of education with the Counseling and Development program. An adjunct professor since 2009, Douglass first served as a licensed clinical psychologist and externship coordinator with the Counseling and Psychological Services department at George Mason University. She earned a doctoral degree in psychology from Wright State University in 2006.

  • Sarika S. Gupta

    Sarika S. Gupta
    Sarika (Sari) S. Gupta joins CEHD as an assistant professor in the Early Childhood Special Education program. She holds a PhD in early childhood special education from the University of Maryland at College Park and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Colorado Denver in early childhood special education leadership and policy. She has taught young children (0-5) with and without disabilities in typical and inclusive settings, coached Head Start teachers, developed professional development workshops, and worked at the U.S. Office of Special Education Programs. Her research interests center on the inclusion of preschoolers with disabilities, autism, and teacher coaching. Gupta is an active member of the Division for Early Childhood of the Council for Exceptional Children and recently served as their National Children's Action (CAN) Network Coordinator.
