When asked what shaped her approach to both life and leadership, Ariana Lewis ’22 doesn’t hesitate—growing up in a Navy family gave her a worldview defined by openness, resilience, and connection. “Being a military child was the greatest blessing,” she reflects. “It truly opened my eyes to different people, cultures, and mindsets. I learned how to navigate the world through a different lens than my peers.” That upbringing later shaped the way she showed up in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) classrooms: eager to learn, eager to challenge herself, and eager to build community.

At George Mason University, Ariana competed as a Division I swimmer while majoring in Sport Management and working as a part-time swim coach. The pace was intense—20+ hours a week of training and competition layered on top of a 15–18 credit academic schedule and student leadership roles, including serving as president of the Sport Management Society. “That period of my life built the foundation for how I approach my work today,” she says. “The discipline, drive, and professionalism I developed as a student-athlete now guide me in the sports, entertainment, and events industry.”

Just as instrumental to her development were the faculty who invested in her potential—especially Craig Esherick, professor and Academic Program Coordinator of the Sport Management Program within the School of Sport, Recreation and Tourism Management. “He was not only an incredible mentor, but a genuine supporter of my growth, both personally and professionally,” Ariana shares. “He took the time to understand my goals and never treated our conversations as just another student interaction.” His guidance gave her both confidence and clarity, and their relationship didn’t end after graduation. “Even now, years later, he still checks in and offers advice. Having someone like him in my corner truly shaped my academic journey and continues to support my career path.”

Her transition into the professional world also began at CEHD. After volunteering at the CAA Basketball Tournament, her strong work ethic caught the attention of staff from Events DC, who encouraged her to apply for the organization’s STRIVE internship program. After completing the 10-week experience, she was offered a full-time position. Proof, she says, of the power of showing up consistently, early, and with intention.

Today, Ariana serves as Special Assistant and Business Manager for Events DC. She previously held roles in both their Sports & Entertainment and Creative Services divisions, supporting projects that span major athletic competitions to cultural diplomacy events. Whether she’s assisting with large-scale logistics, hosting community-facing experiences, or representing the organization with partners and stakeholders, her CEHD foundation is always present.

When asked what she would tell current CEHD students considering a career in sport and event management, her guidance is direct and encouraging:

“Distinguish yourself by expanding your skill set. Volunteer, shadow professionals, earn relevant certifications, and stay curious. Each experience broadens your perspective and helps you stand out.”

From a childhood shaped by service and mobility, to her years on George Mason’s pool deck, and her rising career in public-facing event leadership, Ariana embodies what CEHD instills in its graduates: confidence grounded in care, discipline rooted in passion, and success achieved through mentorship and community.
