Mason Delegation Accepts Confucius Institutes Award

December 18, 2013

Dean Mark R. Ginsberg represented George Mason University in Beijing this month with representatives of the campus's Confucius Institute.

The delegation, attending the 8th Annual International Conference of Confucius Institutes, included former Mason Vice President Joy Hughes and Gao Qing and Lihong Wong of Mason’s Confucius Institute. They were among more than 2,300 delegates from nearly 450 Confucius programs from around the world who met at the Chinese National Convention Center near the famous Olympic Park to discuss a range of issues and participate in workshops, seminars, and discussions.

The Mason delegation in China included former Mason Vice President Joy Hughes, Dean Ginsberg, and Gao Qing and Lihong Wong of Mason’s Confucius Institute.

Confucius Institutes are dedicated to teaching Chinese language and culture, including supporting the training of teachers. Each institute teaches K-12 students, college students, and adults of all ages while also serving as a hub for Chinese culture on campuses. This year, Mason’s Confucius Institute was recognized at the conference with a special award as one of the leading programs in the world.

Partnerships with universities from around the world to provide opportunities for students and faculty to contribute to the improvement of teaching and learning are part of the strategic plan for the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University.

While in China, Dean Ginsberg also met with leadership from Northeast Normal University to discuss possible new collaborative academic programs with George Mason University.
