About Us

We are a student-run organization that focuses on collecting and distributing professional clothing, free of charge.

The Clothes Closet is dedicated to providing professional clothing to students for fieldwork and internships. Our goal is to ensure that every student feels confident and prepared for their professional endeavors.

Appointments

Step 1: Use this link to access the appointment request form

Step 2: Fill in your information (name, George Mason email, department). This information is confidential, and only serves to help us identify and keep in contact with you.

Step 3: Select the time slots that work best for you. Please note:

  1. The appointments are only 30 minutes long, the time slots are there to help us narrow down a specific appointment time that works best for you.
  2. If your preferred appointment time is during walk-ins, please select the walk-ins time slot so that we know you’re coming. If you’d prefer privacy during your appointment, please let us know.
  3. Appointment availability times vary by semester, according to the schedule of the available student workers.
  4. There is an option to list another date and/or time outside of the provided availability times if they do not work for you.

Step 4: Wait for a confirmation email from the Professional Clothes Closet email address. If you have selected an appointment time outside of walk-ins, it is REQUIRED that you respond to the emails in a timely manner in order to schedule and finalize your appointment time.

  • Note: If you do not respond to the emails in a timely manner, your appointment will NOT be scheduled and you will have to make a NEW appointment request in order to reschedule.

Step 5: Attend your appointment!

  • Make sure to bring a reusable bag (or some item to carry your items). If you don’t have one, that’s ok! We have reusable bags on hand to help you.

Donations

Donations can be dropped off to our physical location in the Finley Building, room 116A.

If the closet is closed, and no one is in-office at the time, you can leave your donations in our drop box outside of the Finley Building, room 116B.

Please note:

  • It would be best if you bring your donations in bags or boxes, so as not to leave piles of clothes outside the doors.
  • If your donations cannot fit inside the drop box, please leave it directly next to the box and against the walls, so as not to block the hallway for people walking.
  • The Finley Building is open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. You can enter the building to drop off your donations at any point during that time.
  • The Finley Building may be closed during holidays. Please check George Mason University’s holiday schedule to see if campus is open or closed on the holiday.

At the Closet, our primary goal is always to meet the needs of the students. We regularly collect feedback from our clients on any items or improvements they’d like to see in the Closet. Here are our most requested items, as well as items that would help us improve our service!

Clothing Care and Styling Tips

Below, we’ve included some tips to help you care for and style the clothes.

Build Your Wardrobe Around the Basics

A strong wardrobe begins with timeless essentials that can be easily mixed and matched. Invest in solid-colored polo shirts, button-down shirts, chinos, tailored trousers, dark jeans (if appropriate), sweaters, and quarter zips. Neutral colors like navy, black, gray, white, olive, and khaki provide a versatile foundation for countless outfit combinations while maintaining a clean, professional appearance.

Invest in Comfortable Shoes

Teachers spend most of the day on their feet, making supportive footwear essential. Choose shoes that combine comfort with style, such as loafers, ballet flats, ankle boots, supportive sneakers, or low block heels. Neutral-colored shoes pair effortlessly with multiple outfits, while a colorful pair can serve as a fun statement piece. Comfortable shoes help you move confidently throughout the school day without sacrificing professionalism.

Accessorize for You

A minimalist approach to color makes building a versatile wardrobe effortless. While an occasional eye-catching pattern may find its way into the closet, the focus can remain on solid colors that can be easily mixed and matched. Black and white serve as timeless staples, offering a classic and sophisticated foundation. To add personality and flair, statement accessories take center stage, bold jewelry, elegant scarves, decorative hair barrettes, stylish eyewear, colorful shoes or boots, and fashionable belts, as appropriate.

Dress for the Role You Want

Your wardrobe should communicate professionalism, confidence, and approachability. Dressing intentionally shows respect for yourself, your students, and your profession. Whether your style is classic, modern, or business casual, consistency and confidence are what make a lasting impression.

Confidence Completes the Look

The best outfit is one that makes you feel comfortable and confident. When your clothing fits well, reflects your personality, and allows you to focus on teaching rather than adjusting your outfit, you'll naturally project confidence. A thoughtfully curated wardrobe helps you look professional, feel prepared, and show up as your best self every day.
