Visiting Scholars and Affiliated Research Faculty
CEHD Procedures and Guidelines
The College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) welcomes scholars from outside of the university to engage in collaborative research with our faculty. We have three types of visiting or affiliated scholars:
- International Visiting Scholars with Fulbright Funding
- International Visiting Scholars (not Fulbright)
- Faculty Affiliates for Collaborative Research
Each type of scholar should follow a different process explained below.
International Visiting Scholars with Fulbright Funding
Contact: Associate Dean for Faculty Success
These are international scholars who have applied for the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program and would like to advance their research through a collaboration with a faculty member in CEHD.
Process:
- Interested international scholar with an advanced degree identifies and communicates with the CEHD host faculty. Learn more about CEHD faculty here.
- CEHD host faculty emails the Associate Dean for Faculty Success with information about the potential Fulbright Visiting Scholar including information from the Fullbright packet (name; home university; proposal including purpose of the trip, expected outcomes, and timeline; current CV).
- Office for Faculty Success prepares and signs the invitation letter.
- CEHD host faculty forwards any paperwork that Fulbright will send.
- Office for Faculty Success fills out the paperwork.
- CEHD host faculty notifies the Office for Faculty Success of the award/travel plans as they are finalized.
- Visiting Scholars are appointed as CEHD Affiliate Faculty (for professional affiliation only).
- Presentation at the end of the visit (Department and Center) is required.
International Visiting Scholars (not Fulbright)

These are international scholars who have full funding from their host institution or country and would like to advance their research through a collaboration with a faculty member in CEHD.
- Interested international scholar with an advanced degree identifies and communicates with the CEHD host faculty. Learn more about CEHD faculty here.
- CEHD host faculty emails the Associate Dean for Faculty Success with information about your visiting scholar including: name, home university, funding organization (might be a combination of sponsor or personal funding; 100% personal funding is not allowed), timeline, purpose of the trip, expected outcomes, current CV, PhD (backing from university/employer).
- Office for Faculty Success prepares and signs the invitation letter as well as the J-1 visa packet. J-1 visa packet is shared with the scholar (host faculty is copied).
- CEHD host faculty conducts English proficiency test (as part of J-1 packet) and signs the J-1 visa application package. Information about J-1 visa requirements can be found here.
- CEHD host faculty notifies the Office for Faculty Success of the award/travel plans as they are finalized.
- Visiting Scholars are appointed as CEHD Affiliate Faculty (for professional affiliation only).
- Presentation at the end of the visit (Department and Center) is required.
Faculty Affiliates for Collaborative Research
Contact: Associate Dean for Research
These are faculty from outside of CEHD/GMU who may request an affiliation faculty status to contribute to CEHD research enterprise. These include applicants with an advance degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) who have a clear plan to be active research contributing their expertise to the CEHD strategic research plan.
Process:
- Applicants must submit current CV and a statement of research plans (e.g., external funding applications, other scholarly outputs, contributing to the Research Center operations) outlining their proposed contributions prepared in collaboration with CEHD host faculty. These submissions should be sent to an Associate Dean for Research by the CEHD host faculty. Learn more about CEHD faculty here.
- Affiliated faculty cannot assume leading roles on the external funding applications prepared (PI or co-PI) and submitted by the CEHD Office of Research. Such roles should be reserved for the CEHD host faculty.
- Requests for faculty affiliation will be reviewed by the Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Faculty Success, Chief Business Officer who will make a recommendation to the Dean. The Dean will provide a final approval for faculty affiliation status which should be reviewed every three years.
- Note: affiliate status is for professional purposes only. It does not provide salary/benefits entitlements or rights right of employments. While affiliated status is reviewed every three years, the university may terminate this appointment at any time for any reason (including inactivity).
