Interview with Professor Ricardo O. Sánchez
At a time when headlines and rhetoric often distort the reality of migration, Professor Ricardo O. Sánchez offers a powerful, intimate look at what drives immigrants to leave everything they know in pursuit of a new life. Through the lens of his own experience—beginning as an unaccompanied minor—Sánchez unravels the causes that propel waves of migration from Latin America. He offers an honest, raw portrayal of life in the shadows, filled with fear, resilience, and the quiet joy of finding moments of belonging.
Dr. Ricardo O. Sánchez
Can you share with us the inspiration behind writing this book? What motivated you to tell your story?
I was inspired to write my story because of the widespread misunderstandings about the immigrant experience. Many Americans hold inaccurate perceptions of immigrants, often shaped by biased news sources or political rhetoric, especially during election cycles. Witnessing this disconnect motivated me to share my journey and reveal what life is truly like as an undocumented person in America. Through my story, I aim to dispel myths, bridge divides, and challenge the prevailing narrative that unfairly places blame on immigrant families. Instead, I advocate for meaningful dialogue and investments in long-term solutions to the migration crisis, fostering unity rather than division. Additionally, I felt compelled to restore a sense of humanity to the immigration discourse, reminding others of the individuals and families behind the headlines.
How did you maintain hope and resilience in the face of adversity, and do you have any advice for others facing similar circumstances?
What I would tell students or anyone in similar circumstances is this: always remember where you come from and the reasons your parents—or you if you are a first-generation immigrant—left everything behind to emigrate to America. Reflect on the tremendous sacrifices made to pursue a better life here. For most immigrants, the journey was driven by love for their families and loved ones, and the sacrifices they—or you—made deserve to be honored and remembered.
