2025 Sessions
Math or Literacy? | Presenter Name | Session Title | Session Description |
---|---|---|---|
Literacy | Adriana Cernucan & Dr. Leslie Jones | Writing with Secondary Multilingual Learners in Science | This session will walk participants through the Teaching and Learning Cycle (TLC) for writing with secondary multilingual learners in science. It is a structured, scaffolded approach that includes building context, modeling scientific writing, jointly constructing texts, and guiding independent writing. This iterative process enhances language skills and content knowledge, supporting multilingual students' success in science communication. |
Literacy | Dr. Natasha Saunders | Leading Literacy Improvement to Maximize Student Growth | Advancing literacy achievement can be daunting. However, by taking a collaborative approach (grounded in inquiry and continuous improvement) significant gains can be made. During this session, participants will learn more about how to improve literacy rates for secondary students through collective efforts while simultaneously monitoring for improvement. |
Literacy | Dr. Lilly LePelch | Promoting Writing Skills through Translanguaging Pedagogy in Bilingual/Multilingual High School Students | "This presentation will explore the implementation of translanguaging pedagogy to enhance writing skills in multilingual and bilingual students by tapping into their full linguistic potential. Translanguaging pedagogy has shown significant promise in supporting writing skills in high school bilingual learners by encouraging the use of all linguistic resources available to them. By leveraging both languages in the classroom, students can make connections between their home language and the target language, ultimately enhancing their ability to write more effectively in both. Since implementing a more flexible, differentiated and inclusive approach to language use is critical for language development, bilingual or multilingual students can engage with writing tasks more effectively and think critically about the content they research when they capitalize in their bilingualism or multilingualism. This presentation offers the audience a clear plan for integrating translanguaging practices into the classroom, helping bilingual or multilingual students bridge the gap between their bilingual abilities and academic writing expectations." |
Literacy | Dr. Jennifer Lindenauer | Facilitating Student Interaction to Develop Oral Language and Literacy Through Direct Instruction and Play Routines | This workshop will focus on how to incorporate playful student-to-student and teacher facilitated scenarios to promote oral language and literacy development. The methods presented in this workshop focus on direct instruction along with scaffolded routines using playful interactions providing gradual and shared release to students. |
Dr. Kate Roscioli | Networking Break | Network with fellow participants first by exploring a fun game, and then set up to discuss hot topics, chosen by participants. | |
Math | Dr. Darwin Mills | Leadership Collaboration to Enhance Mathematics Teaching and Learning | This session is geared toward fostering collaboration among teachers, teacher leaders, and administrators to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics as well as promote leadership in the field. This is an opportunity to network and share best practices amongst the participants. |
Math | Dr. Michelle DeLoach | Clear Instructions Lead to Clear Solutions | This session will apply the backward design model and success criteria to strengthen teacher clarity, aiming to improve both teacher and student outcomes. |
Math | Dr. Theresa Wills & Dr. Jen Suh | Empowering Teachers with Data Literacy and Technology to Address Community-Based Challenges | This session is designed for educators looking to enhance their data literacy skills while deepening our understanding of the mathematics standards using the data cycle (VDOE, 2023) and integrate technology into their teaching to tackle real-world community issues. Participants will explore how to engage students to collect real world data, analyze and interpret data, use digital tools effectively, and apply these skills to develop solutions for local challenges. Through collaborative activities, coaches and teachers will learn how to guide students through the data cycle to identify problems, generate insights, and create meaningful projects that have a positive impact on their communities. By the end of the session, coaches and teachers will be equipped with practical strategies to incorporate data-driven problem-solving and technology into their classrooms. |
Math | Jen Fessenden | Using Math Forward Resources to Frame Collaborative Planning Sessions | Math Forward resources, VDOE Instructional Guides, district pacing guides, new standards, OH MY! Participants in this session will take a deep dive into the Math Forward resources to discover how they can be used, in conjunction with other resources, to frame and lead collaborative planning sessions. |
Math | Dr. Holly Tate | Strength-Based Coaching through Collaborative Learning Teams | In this session, math leaders will explore facilitating collaborative learning team meetings using a strength-based lens to plan from student work and rich tasks. Participants will engage with the DuFour questions, embedding and expanding them through student work analysis, rehearsals, and video analysis to deepen instructional planning and teacher collaboration. |
Math | Dr. Deb Crawford | Coaching for Data Literacy Connections All Year | Data literacy is a workforce-valued skill set infused into K-12 standards. Yet K-8 students' developmental needs differ from those of older students. This session gives practical examples of how to design embedded professional learning for K-8 teachers around data literacy. It will define a data literacy skill set, explain how to know where students are developmentally on a progression, and design lessons to move learners to the next level. |
