Event Description

Many gyms play music during workouts. Specific workouts tend to lend themselves to certain genres of music (and volumes of music). But what does science tell us about music as a motivating operation? It turns out quite a bit if we move away from behavior analytic journals into the kinesiology and exercise science literature. We will explore the literature around the use of music in both personal and group exercise settings and compare it to the recommendations made to group fitness professionals. This information will then be analyzed from a behavior analytic perspective. Attendees will walk away with a better understanding of how their music choices affect their performance during exercise.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will describe the state of the scientific literature with regard to the effects of music on exercise performance.

  • Participants will compare and contrast the scientific literature with current professional recommendations for music in exercise settings.

  • Participants will choose music for their own personal workouts that maximize performance.
