One- and Two-Credit Physical Activity Courses Are the Perfect Fit

July 2, 2014

Your mind and body work best when both are in top condition, but getting a degree can be stressful. With classes, papers, research, and exams, it’s easy to find yourself feeling drained. What's a busy student to do?

Here's an answer — make room in your schedule for fun physical activity courses!

Introduction to Soccer (PHED 102) and Intermediate Soccer (PHED 182).

The Physical Activity for Lifetime Wellness (PALW) program runs more than 60 courses each semester. Because most are offered at a beginner level, they are the perfect opportunity to try something you’ve never done before.

You can get outdoors and master the finer points of Fly Fishing, step to the beat in a Latin Dance course, or develop a stronger, healthier cardiovascular system with Fitness Walking.

Most courses are only one credit hour, run for half of the semester, and some meet on the weekends, enabling even the busiest student to take time to enjoy exercise and feel refreshed. As the program’s name implies, mental and physical fitness are essential not only during college, but throughout life.

Rock Climbing I (PRLS 117) and Rock Climbing II (PRLS 187).

Maybe the summer’s heat is making you wish you knew how to swim. Or World Cup fever inspired you to take to the soccer pitch. There are both introductory and intermediate swimming and soccer courses for those who want to learn.

Choose from courses in the following categories:

  • Aerobics and Fitness
  • Aquatics and Water Sports
  • Bowling and Golf
  • Dance
  • Martial Arts
  • Outdoor Sports
  • Racket Sports
  • Rock Climbing
  • Shooting
  • Skiing and Snowboarding
  • Team Sports
  • Weight Training
  • Yoga and Pilates

Introduction to Horsemanship (PRLS 122) and Intermediate Horsemanship (PRLS 192).

Check the George Mason University Schedule of Classes for dates and times of courses. (Search under both "Parks, Recreation, and Leisure Studies" and "Physical Education"). You'll earn academic credit, strengthen your body, rejuvenate your mind, and just maybe find your new favorite hobby.

Introduction to Tai Chi (PHED 149) and Intermediate Tai Chi (PHED 160).

Weight Training and Body Conditioning (PHED 108).

Introduction to Whitewater Kayaking (PRLS 170), Basic Coastal Kayaking (PRLS 173), and Open Water Coastal Kayaking (PRLS 174).

Physical activity courses are offered by the School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism, part of the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University.
