The Initiatives in Educational Transformation Program

The IET program demonstrates social justice as a core programmatic value (1) in its curriculum and (2) in its collaborative relationships, and (3) as an essential component of faculty research. IET offers two courses with language and culture projects, several courses include field trips that attempt to situate teachers in an environment that deepens their understanding of human differences, all courses attempt to create learning spaces where students can have authentic dialogue across differences, and the capstone project is a school change action research project that examines systemic inequities. Throughout the program, teachers are encouraged to raise awareness of the dynamics of power and privilege, and the inequities in education and society in their P-12 classrooms in order to prepare children and youth for the 21st Century in a pluralistic world.
