The Initiatives in Educational Transformation Program

IET emphasizes ethical teacher leadership (the moral base of practitioners' professionalism) as foundational in transforming schools and communities to create more humane places to learn and live. As a central component of the program's learning communities, democratic leadership is developed and exercised by including and raising all voices, taking them seriously, and drawing insights from them. Beyond the IET classroom, cohorts of teachers have visited with and shared insights with educational policy makers on public policies that affect the classroom. The capstone project — the school change action research project — is an exercise in ethical teacher leadership beyond the P-12 classroom. In the project, two or more teachers work together to conduct a needs assessment and other data gathering, including a literature review, to design a sustainable and systematic response to a widely perceived need in one or more schools.
