School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism - George Mason University

The School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism (SRHT) offers exciting, career-ready majors in dynamic fields such as athletic training, tourism and events management, health and physical education, kinesiology, sport management, and recreation management. SRHT features renowned faculty, cutting-edge research, six laboratories and centers, and a diverse student body of more than 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students each year. Each major requires one or more internship or clinical experiences, ensuring that students graduate not just with a transcript but with a resume that demonstrates their professional aptitude and skills.

Student Clinical Practice: Field Experiences & Internships

Background Checks/Fingerprinting for Field Experiences and Internships:

Many CEHD programs require multiple field experiences, and our school and agency partners require Mason students to be fingerprinted and pass a criminal background check prior to field experience work. Students must assume the risk that classes may be deferred and their program progress delayed or altered due to the individual severity of notations on such a check and review by individual agencies.

All local school systems require students to complete a criminal background check through their human resources office (not through George Mason University) prior to beginning the internship. Detailed instructions on the process will be sent to the student from either the school system or Mason. Students are strongly advised to disclose any/all legal incidents that may appear on their records. The consequence of failing to do so, whether or not such incidents resulted in conviction, is termination of the internship.

Field Experience Placements:

A field experience is a variety of early and ongoing field-based opportunities in which candidates may observe, assist, tutor, and/or conduct research. Field experiences may occur in off-campus settings, such as schools. (NCATE, 2008)

Questions? Please send any questions related to field experience to fieldexp@gmu.edu.

Internship/Practicum Placements:

Clinical practice is student teaching or internships that provide candidates with an intensive and extensive culminating activity. Candidates are immersed in the learning community and are provided opportunities to develop and demonstrate competence in the professional roles in which they are preparing. (NCATE, 2008) Clinical practice occurs after the field experience.

Please note that ALL endorsement coursework must be completed, with all transcripts submitted and approved by the CEHD Endorsement Office prior to the internship application deadline. Since the internship application must be submitted in the semester prior to the actual internship, please make an appointment to meet with the Endorsement Specialist and plan the completion of your Endorsements accordingly.

Effective Spring 2015 Internships, all official and passing test scores must be submitted and in the Mason system (i.e. Banner/PatriotWeb) by the internship application deadline. Please allow a minimum of six weeks for processing of your official test scores.

Arlington County Internship Applications: Any students interested in internships in Arlington County must complete the required Arlington County Application and submit the Arlington County Application in addition to their Mason Internship Application. Please note that completion and submission of the Arlington County Application does not guarantee placement in Arlington County.

A note to students in traditional internships who are hired for full-time positions by local public school divisions: you may not switch from a traditional internship to an on-the-job internship in the same semester. Students in such situations must withdraw from the traditional internship (subject to applicable tuition penalties) and re-apply for the on-the-job internship in a subsequent semester.

Please review the table below for internship information. Questions? Please send any questions related to internsh@gmu.edu.

NOTE: Spring teacher candidates are expected to follow their school division’s calendar (e.g. their spring break, not Mason’s) during internship. Students should submit their AED/CPR/First Aid certifications to internsh@gmu.edu. Students are no longer required to submit certifications to cehdacad@gmu.edu.
