School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism - George Mason University

The School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism (SRHT) offers exciting, career-ready majors in dynamic fields such as athletic training, tourism and events management, health and physical education, kinesiology, sport management, and recreation management. SRHT features renowned faculty, cutting-edge research, six laboratories and centers, and a diverse student body of more than 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students each year. Each major requires one or more internship or clinical experiences, ensuring that students graduate not just with a transcript but with a resume that demonstrates their professional aptitude and skills.

If you currently do not hold a valid VA teaching license and are not working as a full-time, contractual teacher with a VA school district, please provide the GMU Licensure Specialist with a completed licensure application packet which includes the following:

  1. Licensure Application Fee: $50 if you list a VA address, $75 if you list an out of state address (make checks payable to The Treasurer of Virginia). Checks must be dated within 60 days of when the fee is received by the VA Dept. of Ed.
  2. Initial Licensure Application Form
  3. Official Transcripts (from all universities attended INCLUDING GMU transcripts; must be in sealed envelope(s)).
  4. College Verification Form (complete part I only, but be sure that your full address is listed).
  5. Child Abuse Requirement (Required for all applicants); Please visit the following website, complete the free online module and print a copy of your certificate. (http://www.dss.virginia.gov/family/cps/mandated_reporters/cwse5691/story.html)
  6. VCLA Scores* (Does not apply to School Counseling and Ed Leadership; photocopies of official score reports can be accepted).
  7. Praxis II scores* (if applicable; photocopies of official score reports can be accepted).
  8. RVE Scores* OR VRA Scores* (Only required for Reading Specialist, Early Childhood Ed, Elementary Ed and certain areas of Special Education; photocopies of official score reports can be accepted).
  9. A self-addressed envelope (used to mail a copy of the completed College Verification Form to you).
  10. Copy of American Red Cross or American Heart Association certificate for CPR/AED/Emergency First Aid.
  11. Effective July 1st, 2017, every person seeking initial licensure must complete the Dyslexia Awareness Module (http://www.doe.virginia.gov/teaching/licensure/dyslexia-module/story.html). Please print and save the completion certificate at the end of the module.

* Students MUST submit photocopies or original test score reports. The Licensure Coordinator cannot obtain these scores from ANY GMU records.*

- Career Switcher students, please contact your programs for your licensure application instructions.


If you do currently hold a valid VA teaching license and are not currently working with a VA school district, please provide the GMU Licensure Specialist with the following:

  1. Addition of endorsement fee - $25 (checks written to The Treasurer of Virginia).
  2. A written memo to the VDOE requesting that the new endorsement be added to your current license.
  3. Official Transcripts (from GMU).
  4. College Verification Form (complete part I only, but be sure that your full address is listed).
  5. VRA scores (Only required at time of Add-On for Reading Specialist; photo copies of official score reports can be accepted).
    *Students MUST submit photocopies or original test score reports. The Licensure Specialist cannot obtain these scores from other files on campus such as degree program files or internship files.*

If you are currently working with a VA school district, please provide the GMU Licensure Specialist with the following:

  1. College Verification Form (complete part I only, but be sure that your full address is listed).

    You must be sure that ALL licensure grades have been posted prior to submitting your CVF.
    **Special Education- all waivers must be processed and reflected in the University system prior to submission of the CVF.
    ***Education Leadership- if you did not receive your Masters degree from GMU, please submit a photocopy of your Masters transcripts along with your College Verification Form. If you did receive your Masters from GMU, please be sure that your degree date has posted prior to submitting the form.

The college verification form will be sent back to you. You will then submit the completed form and the other required licensure materials to your school district's licensure representative. They will then submit the application on your behalf.
