The School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism (SRHT) offers exciting, career-ready majors in dynamic fields such as athletic training, tourism and events management, health and physical education, kinesiology, sport management, and recreation management. SRHT features renowned faculty, cutting-edge research, six laboratories and centers, and a diverse student body of more than 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students each year. Each major requires one or more internship or clinical experiences, ensuring that students graduate not just with a transcript but with a resume that demonstrates their professional aptitude and skills.

There are multiple opportunities to participate in graduation celebrations. In the fall, graduates are invited to participate in the Winter Graduation, and in the spring, graduates can join their peers across campus at the University-wide Commencement ceremony as well as attend one of the degree celebrations hosted by the College of Education and Human Development. The faculty and staff, in conjunction with your family and peers, look forward to saluting the culmination of your academic and professional achievements at Mason. IMPORTANT:

  • You must apply to graduate by the deadline on Patriot Web in order to have your name appear in the graduation programs and to receive your diploma.
  • Certificates students graduating from both a Masters and a Certificate OR just a Certificate need to apply to graduate through Patriot Web for their Certificate.
  • Master’s and Bachelor’s students who graduate in Summer 2017 should plan to participate in the Spring 2017 University Commencement and Degree Celebration ceremonies. Apply to graduate for Summer 2017 through Patriot Web by February 24 to ensure your name will appear in the Degree Celebration program.

Degree Conferral
The Office of the University Registrar Graduation Section will begin to award degrees after this date.

IMPORTANT:

  • Degrees will not be officially awarded prior to this date.
  • A 6-Week "Grace Period" is given to students to resolve certain issues delaying degree conferral, such as incomplete grades, outstanding study elsewhere transcripts, or need for substitutions and waiver forms.

SRHT students will be celebrated for their scholastic accomplishments during the Degree Celebration. Each student will be recognized by crossing the stage, being presented by name, and sharing that moment with their peers, faculty, staff and guests. Recipients of the Program Awards, Excellence in Writing award, and Outstanding Student Athletes will be recognized.

Tickets are not required for the event. There is no limit to the number of guests who wish to attend the celebration, but the event will also be livestreamed for those who are not able to physically attend. Information on how to access the livestream will be communicated at a later date.

Students have until Friday, March 23, 2018 to confirm their attendance at the SRHT Degree Celebration.

Winter Graduation

Eligible Degree Candidates:

  • Summer 2018 – Doctoral degree candidates only
  • Fall 2018 – Bachelors, masters, and doctoral degree candidates

All CEHD graduates and their guests are to attend the 2:00 pm ceremony in EagleBank Arena on Dec 20, 2018. All degree candidates must arrive by 1:00 pm to EagleBank Arena, Lower East Side. The EagleBank Arena concourse doors will open for guests at 1:00 p.m. The ceremony will last approximately two hours. All graduates will walk across the stage and be recognized by name, and doctoral candidates will be hooded.

Students are highly encouraged to attend the official University Commencement ceremony. The ceremony begins with graduates processing through campus. There are no tickets required for guests at commencement. This year there is a possibility that the EagleBank Arena may reach capacity, so please arrive early. The Center for the Arts will be an overflow venue in case EagleBank Arena reaches capacity. Additionally, the event will be livestreamed for those who are not able to physically attend. That information will be communicated out at a later date.

During this ceremony the official University guest speaker and the selected student speaker representing the class of 2018 deliver the commencement addresses. Graduates will be recognized by college, while PhD graduates will be individually recognized and hooded on stage. Lastly, the President of the University will confer degrees, and students will turn their tassels to symbolize their graduate status.

Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff are an integral part of ensuring the success of our Degree Celebrations. Faculty are expected to represent the College at University Commencement and CEHD Degree Celebrations. Faculty are eligible to rent regalia at no cost for the Spring Graduation Ceremonies. Order through the bookstore, (703) 993-2666, by Friday, April 13 to avoid incurring a $25 late fee.

If you are a faculty member and wish to participate as a Marshall, or a staff member who would like to volunteer to assist at the GSE or SRHT Degree Celebration, please register by Friday, April 13.

Caps and Gowns

Commencement and Degree Celebrations at Mason are ceremonies where graduates and faculty wear caps and gowns. Doctoral and Master’s candidates must also wear a hood. Please state your field of study when purchasing your hood because different colors denote different fields of study (for example, education majors receive a light blue hood). Students and faculty should order regalia through the University Bookstore at (703) 993-2666.

Degree Celebration Student Speaker

If you are interested in being considered to be the student speaker at your respective Degree Celebration, write and submit a speech that highlights your student experience at Mason, and how you achieved the success we will be celebrating.

In addition to your speech, submissions must include your full name, G#, Mason email, and Program of Study. Your speech should be no longer than 1,000 words (double-spaced, Arial or Times New Roman, 12 point font). All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of College faculty and staff. Submissions are due by Friday, April 6, 2018 to bquiles@gmu.edu.

University Honors and Honor Cords

Undergraduate students who qualify to graduate with University Honors will be sent an e-mail from the Office of the University Registrar informing them of their eligibility to purchase honor cords. Notification is sent approximately ten days prior to Commencement. University Honors and Cords are coordinated through the Registrar's office. Visit the Registrar's website for more information.

Guest Parking

Fairfax Campus - All parking lots on campus are available for guest parking. Handicapped and special-assistance parking is available in Lot A adjacent to the EagleBank Arena, South Entrance.

Graduation Photos

Professional photos will be taken as you are recognized on stage. Make sure to look for all the great photos captured from the graduation ceremonies at https://www.gradimages.com/.

Diploma Information

*Students will receive an email when their diploma has been mailed. Diplomas are mailed to students approximately 6-8 weeks after each conferral date.

Diploma Name
Your diploma name MUST reflect your name of record during the last term of attendance at George Mason. To change your name of record, including adding a middle name or a suffix, you must provide legal documentation in the form of a birth certificate, passport, marriage certificate, or a court document. Please go to the Change of Name page for more information. Accent marks may be requested using the Diploma Accent Mark Request form.

Diploma Address
You must verify that your diploma address is correct. Please go to the Update Diploma Mailing Address page for detailed instructions and contact Graduation Services at graduate@gmu.edu with any questions about the delivery of your diploma. If you have moved and your diploma has already been ordered, please set up a forwarding address with the post office.
