Course Preparation and Instruction
Patriot Web is a self service web site for students, faculty and staff that includes class registration and payment, faculty/staff services (i.e. timesheets, class lists, and grading), schedule of classes, university catalog, and much more. Please contact your program office for assistance.
Offered via the My Mason portal, Blackboard is a web-based Learning Management System (LMS) used at Mason to deliver online or web-enhanced courses. Blackboard provides a secure log in system and tools to create and administer face to face and online courses. Some of these tools include discussion forums, student group areas, text-based and real time chat, a gradebook for securely distributing grades to enrolled students, and assessment tools for administering quizzes and exams. CEHD's Office of Technology Support staffs and maintains five Fairfax campus computer labs that provide technical support for Blackboard users. For assistance and troubleshooting, visit their website or call 703-993-2036.
SyllabiAll faculty are required to provide students with either a printed syllabus during the first class meeting, or post a copy online before the first class. Syllabi should be submitted to your Academic Program Coordinator at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the class. Syllabi resources and templates are available.
First Class Information
As soon as the class begins, faculty should read the  class list  aloud and confirm all students who are present and not. If a student does not appear on your list, no matter what the student tells you, the student is not enrolled in your class and cannot attend your class until registered. Students may register up to the add/drop last day through Patriot Web. Cohort students should contact their program office for assistance.
Students who are having difficulty registering or have questions regarding their registration status should be sent to the Student and Academic Affairs (SAA) or they may contact Angie Swadley at email@example.com.
Online registration overrides issued by the instructor of record allow additional students to register for a class that is closed or has controlled enrollment. Instructors must obtain a student's name and G number and confirm the student's status with the program office in order to issue the online registration override on  (Patriot Web). Once you have entered overrides, students must register themselves on Patriot Web.
Before the end of each semester, the university's Office of Institutional Research and Reporting provides each instructor with standardized course evaluation forms for distribution to students before the final examination. The designated student (not the instructor) must submit the completed evaluations directly to the Office of Institutional Research and Reporting for processing. The designated students for classes held at the Prince William or Fairfax campus can submit the completed evaluations into the Drop Box as indicated.
A summary report is returned to faculty members during the following semester. If faculty have questions about this process or do not receive evaluation forms for distribution or summary results, they are asked to contact the Office of Institutional Research and Reporting. Inclement Weather Policy
Decisions on whether to close the university or alter its schedule due to weather are based on the conditions of campus roads, parking lots, and surrounding roads and main arteries. Every attempt will be made to make all decisions regarding closings or late openings no later than 6 a.m. Decisions to close for reasons other than weather will be made in response to specific emergency condition and communicated to all affected individuals as quickly as possible, in accordance with emergency notification procedures.
When there is a change in the university schedule due to inclement weather or other circumstances, the announcement will be made on the university switchboard, (993-1000), Arlington (993-8999) and Prince William (993-8350) information lines, and the university's main web site.
Register with the Mason Alert system to be immediately notified of any change in schedule.
