Education Visionary Milton Chen to Speak on June 5

June 3, 2013

CEHD is delighted to welcome Milton Chen, senior fellow at the George Lucas Educational Foundation, to campus on June 5 to speak about innovation and schools.

Milton Chen

Dr. Chen is the author of Education Nation: Six Leading Edges of Innovation in our Schools, and will provide the keynote address at Mason's 2013 eLearning Colloquium. Information about the event is available at http://innovationsinelearning.gmu.edu.

Hosted by the Division of Learning Technologies in George Mason University’s College of Education and Human Development, the eLearning Colloquium takes place in the Johnson Center Cinema on Wednesday, June 5 from 4 to 7 p.m.

The keynote is free and open to the public.

In his speech, Chen will discuss how school systems are reinventing themselves to focus on growing edges of innovation in districts. These edges include the thinking edge, the curriculum edge, the technology edge, the time and place edge, the co-teaching edge, and the youth edge. The edges are also the framework of his book Education Nation, which was selected by the American School Board Journal as one of the 10 best books of 2010.

Chen served as executive director of the George Lucas Educational Foundation, a non-profit organization that uses multimedia and documentaries to communicate a new vision for schools, for 12 years. Additionally, he is the founding director of the KQED Center for Education in San Francisco, a director of research at Sesame Workshop in New York, and an assistant professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. His work has been honored by the Congressional Black Caucus, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Fred Rogers Award, the Association of Educational Service Agencies, the Exploratorium, and the Lawrence Hall of Science.
