John Moore, Former Marriott Executive, Joins Mason Faculty

April 24, 2014

John Moore, formerly of Marriott International, has joined the faculty of the School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism in Mason’s College of Education and Human Development. He will begin teaching in Fall 2014.

John Moore, Executive-in-Residence and Instructor of Hospitality Management

Moore, who retired as a Marriott senior vice president, brings a wealth of hospitality experience after 35 years in a variety of executive positions that covered franchising, finance, development, operations, and sales and marketing.

“John is a proven and highly regarded hospitality leader. We are delighted that he is joining our team and will assist with program development and the creation of meaningful linkages with industry,” says Maggie Daniels, academic program coordinator for the Tourism and Events Management (TEM) program. “Hospitality goes well beyond hotels, encompassing aspects of tourism, conferences, special events and restaurants as well, so all of our students stand to benefit, not just those in the hospitality management concentration.”

“There’s a reason this region is called the Silicon Valley of hospitality,” says Moore. “We’re right in the hub of the industry, and Mason hired me to not only teach, but also to tap into my industry network and help the program evolve. I’m hoping to be able to funnel a lot of expertise and counsel into the curriculum and pave the way for mentorships, scholarships, internships and other practical learning experiences.”

One of Moore’s initial duties will be to help populate a nascent advisory board that will help guide curriculum development. The board’s purpose will be to steer the growth of the program to align with industry needs and to ensure students graduate with the right mix of skills and knowledge.

“We seek to provide our students with a unique perspective and competitive advantage as they enroll in our hospitality management concentration,” says Mark R. Ginsberg, dean of the College of Education and Human Development. “Adding to the instructional programs and the scholarship of our faculty already taking place, we are confident that John’s background and expertise in hotel management will provide a real-world, 360-view of the hospitality industry and create many valuable partnerships for our program and opportunities for our students.”

For Moore, who holds a master’s degree in Urban Affairs, Housing Economics and a bachelor’s degree in History and Education, coming into a classroom is like coming full circle. “When I was young, I thought I would be a teacher, but I was waylaid into business,” he says. “I had to teach a class as part of the interview process, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it and how engaged the students were.

“It’s exciting to join a program that’s relatively new and at a stage that’s ripe for growth,” he says. “I think the people who provide input will see the impact of their involvement very quickly. And I think the students will reap the benefits very quickly, too.”
