Discussion on Education Equity Policies to Feature James Anderson on Oct 22

Students, alumni, faculty, and members of the public are all welcome to a discussion event on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, called "The Historical Relevance of Education Equity Policies in an Obama Era."

The event is free and open to the public, and will be held from 4:30 - 7:15 pm in Room 1201 of Merten Hall on George Mason University's Fairfax campus.

The featured speaker is preeminent history of education scholar James D. Anderson, PhD, the Edward William and Jane Marr Gutsell Professor of Education and head of the Department of Education Policy, Organization, and Leadership at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Anderson will present a fireside chat regarding his scholarship on the history of African American education in the South, desegregation in K-12 and higher education systems, the history of African American school achievement in the 20th century, and implications of recent court decisions for affirmative action and equity in education.

Joining him will be David J. Armor, Professor Emeritus of Public Policy of the School of Policy, Government, and International Affairs at George Mason University, and Brenda Shum, Director of the Educational Opportunities Project at the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. The panel discussion on the relevance of education equity policies in the Obama era will be moderated by Assistant Professor Diana D'Amico
