CEHD Appoints 14 New Faculty Members

Dean Mark R. Ginsberg announced the appointment of 14 new faculty members to the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD).

"I am delighted to welcome this outstanding group to George Mason University," said Ginsberg at last week's Opening Session for faculty and staff. "Working together, CEHD faculty, staff, and students promote learning and development across the lifespan, around our region, and for the world.”

The new faculty represent all eight divisions of the college and it’s two schools, the Graduate School of Education and the School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism.

 


Division of Advanced Professional Teacher Development and International Education

Director: Professor Beverly Shaklee

 

Nancy Holincheck

  • Nancy Holincheck
    Nancy Holincheck joins CEHD as an assistant professor of education with the Advanced Studies in Teaching and Learning program. She earned a PhD in education with a specialization in teaching and teacher education as well as an MS in applied and engineering physics from George Mason University. Among her research interests are teacher education, teacher research, STEM education, and problem-based learning. Holincheck previously taught education courses in education policy, education research, and science education at American University, and she taught a research course to master’s students at George Mason. A National Board Certified Teacher since 2001, Holincheck began her teaching career as a high school physics teacher in Fairfax County, Virginia and most recently taught at Chantilly High School in Chantilly, Virginia.

 


Division of Educational Psychology, Research Methods, and Education Policy

Rodney Hopson

  • Rodney Hopson
    Rodney Hopson joins CEHD as a professor of education affiliated with the Center for Education Policy and Evaluation. Previously, he served as a professor in the Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership, School of Education, teaching faculty in the Center of Qualitative and Interpretive Research and Honors Program in the McAnulty School of Liberal Arts at Duquesne University. In addition to his professional awards from Duquesne University and the American Evaluation Association for scholarship, leadership, and service, Hopson served as the Hillman Distinguished Professor, is a former Fulbright Scholar (Namibia), and a former visiting fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge University. He is on the editorial boards of New Directions for Evaluation; Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education, and Society; Anthropology and Education Quarterly; and Educational Foundations. In addition, he is co-editor of the book series, Education Policy as/in Practice: Critical Cultural Studies, published by Information Age Publication. Currently, Hopson serves as the past-president of the American Evaluation Association.

 


Division of Elementary, Literacy, and Secondary Education

Director: Professor Elizabeth Sturtevant

 

Toya Jones Frank

  • Toya Jones Frank
    Toya Jones Frank joins CEHD as an assistant professor in the Secondary Education program. She received a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Mathematics Education and an MEd in Education Policy and Curriculum Theory from the University of Maryland, College Park. Her research interests include: issues of equity and access to advanced mathematics for underrepresented students, secondary mathematics teacher preparation, using sociocultural frameworks to understand mathematics classroom interaction, and recruitment and retention of mathematics teachers for underserved schools. Frank was previously employed as a research fellow and course lecturer in the Center for Mathematics Education at the University of Maryland. She also received the Distinguished Graduate Student Lecturer award from University of Maryland’s Center for Teaching Excellence while earning her doctorate. Frank is a former high school mathematics teacher and department chair who worked in Maryland and Florida public schools, as well as former educational consultant for clients including DC Public Schools and ACT, Inc.

 

Audra Parker

  • Audra Parker
    Audra Parker joins CEHD as an associate professor of education in the Elementary Education program. Prior to joining Mason, she taught in the Department of Childhood Education and Literacy Studies at the University of South Florida where she served as coordinator for the Elementary Education PhD program and coordinator for the elementary education Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. Parker also taught elementary and middle school students for eight years in Virginia and Georgia. Her areas of interest include pre-service teachers’ beliefs and practices in U.S. and study abroad contexts, innovations in teacher education, elementary teacher practices, and young adolescents’ school experiences. She earned a PhD in elementary education from the University of Georgia and an MAT in elementary education from the University of Virginia. Parker is a reviewer for the Journal of Teacher Education and Middle Grades Research Journal.

 

Corey Sell

  • Corey Sell
    Corey Sell joins CEHD as an assistant professor of education in the Elementary Education program. He holds a PhD in teaching and teacher education from George Mason University and an MEd in curriculum and instruction from the University of Virginia. Among his research interests are the personal and professional lives of teachers, teacher retention and attrition, teacher collaboration, and self-study research. Sell recently gave a presentation on “Teacher Retention: The Lived Experiences of Three Elementary Teacher Stayers” at the Association of Teacher Educators Summer 2013 Conference where he was selected as one of ATE’s 2013 emerging scholars.

 


Division of Health and Human Performance

Director: Associate Professor Dominique Banville

 

Marcie Fyock

  • Marcie Fyock
    Marcie Fyock joins CEHD as an instructor of athletic training in the School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism’s Athletic Training program. Her most recent employment was in Indiana as an athletic trainer where she provided comprehensive health care to 400 high school student athletes in a public school system. Concurrently, she designed and implemented therapeutic rehabilitation programs for a chiropractic and sports performance center. Fyock also served as an instructor in the undergraduate Athletic Training program at Franklin College in Indiana. She is currently finishing her doctorate in athletic training from the University of Idaho. She holds an MS in exercise science from Syracuse University and a BS in Athletic Training from Slippery Rock University.

Sonya Horsford

  • Sonya Horsford
    Sonya Horsford joins CEHD as an associate professor of education in the Education Leadership program. She holds an EdD in educational leadership and an MPA in public administration from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Her previous position was at UNLV as senior resident scholar of education at the Lincy Institute, and prior to that position she taught graduate-level courses in UNLV’s Department of Educational Leadership. Horsford’s research areas and interests are in educational leadership and policy, politics of education, urban education, school desegregation and resegregation, and community-based school reform. She is a member of the editorial boards of Educational Administration Quarterly, Journal of School Leadership, and Journal of Negro Education, and is a board member of The Network for Public Education.

 

Bethany Letiecq

  • Bethany Letiecq
    Bethany Letiecq joins CEHD as an associate professor of Human Development and Family Science in CEHD’s new Human Development and Family Science program. She received her PhD in health education/family studies and her MS in family and community development from the University of Maryland. Prior to coming to Mason, Letiecq taught at Montana State University in Bozeman in the Department of Health and Human Development. She is associate editor of the Journal of Family Issues, an editorial board member of Family Relations, and chair-elect of the Family Policy Section of the National Council on Family Relations. In addition, she is the 2013 recipient of the Betty Coffey Award, given by Montana State’s Women’s & Gender Studies Committee, for her community-based action research to improve health disparities among families on the economic and social margins.

 

Richard Moniuszko

  • Richard Moniuszko
    Richard Moniuszko will join CEHD in January 2014 as an associate professor of education in the Education Leadership program. He has served as deputy superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) since May 2006, helping to lead one of the country’s largest school systems, with 181,500 students. Moniuszko will retire from FCPS in January 2014. Prior to joining FCPS, he served as deputy superintendent of Richland School District One in Columbia, South Carolina. In addition, he has held district-level leadership positions in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in Charlotte, North Carolina as director of instructional accountability and director of pupil services. He holds an EdD in educational administration from the University of South Carolina and an MS in school psychology from Winthrop University.

 


Division of Learning Technologies

Director: Professor Nada Dabbagh

 

Jered Borup

  • Jered Borup
    Jered Borup joins CEHD as an assistant professor of education in the Learning Technologies in Schools program. He previously taught 9th grade social studies for six years and recently received his PhD in instructional psychology and technology from Brigham Young University. Borup earned an MEd in secondary education with an emphasis in social studies from Idaho State University. His research interests include K-12 online learning, online and blended learning communities and interactions, and technology integration. His recent journal articles have appeared in the Internet and Higher Education and the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, and an article in the latter journal won second place in the Information Age Publishing journal article award for advancing practice. He also has articles accepted for publication in Distance Education and the British Journal of Educational Technology.

 


Division of Special Education and disAbility Research

Permon Mitchell

  • Permon Mitchell
    Permon Mitchell joins CEHD as a professional faculty member serving as the residential housing coordinator of Mason LIFE. He has more than 10 years of experience in counseling, staff development and training, and office management. Mitchell was previously employed as the director of residential life/assistant to the dean of students at Morris College in South Carolina, where he supervised operations, facilities, residential life, and living-learning communities and other aspects in support of housing and residential life. He has also worked as a client services specialist/training coordinator for the South Carolina Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. He earned an MA in rehabilitation counseling and a BS in counselor education with a minor in psychology.

 

Douglas Cox

  • Douglas Cox
    Douglas Cox joins CEHD as a professional faculty member who is serving as a project director in the Kellar Institute for Human disAbilities. He holds an EdS in special education policy and administration from Lynchburg College and an MEd in special education, intellectual disabilities from the University of Virginia. Cox most recently worked as an editorial consultant for the Virginia Department of Education and as an adjunct professor at the University of Richmond. From 2001–2012 he served as assistant superintendent for special education and student services for the Virginia Department of Education, during which time he managed a seven-unit division. He has served on the board and as president of the National Association of State Directors of Special Education.

 


Division of Sport, Recreation, and Tourism

Director: Professor Russell Brayley

 

Paul Jin

  • Naehyun (Paul) Jin
    Naehyun (Paul) Jin joins CEHD as an assistant professor of hospitality management in the Tourism and Events Management program. He received his PhD in hospitality administration from Texas Tech University and his Master of Tourism and Hospitality Management from Temple University. He also holds an MBA from Chung-Ang University in Korea. Jin’s research interests include tourism and hospitality marketing, consumer behavior, event quality and management, and innovations for service in restaurants. Recent articles have appeared in the Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing and the Journal of Hospitality Marketing and Management. Jin is a member of the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education.

 

Susan Slocum

  • Susan Slocum
    Susan Slocum joins CEHD as an assistant professor of Tourism and Events Management in the Tourism and Events Management program. Her previous position was as an extension analyst in the Department of Applied Economics at Utah State University, and she was also employed as the deputy director of the Institute for Tourism Research at the University of Bedfordshire in England. Slocum’s research interests include sustainable tourism development, rural planning and policy, development and poverty reduction, and sustainable agricultural development. She received her PhD in parks, recreation, and tourism management from Clemson University and her MS in resource and applied economics from the University of Nevada. She also holds an MBA from Cameron University.
