Best Course Ever? Cruise Ship Management

January 22, 2015

Everyone's happy when the required assignment is a Caribbean cruise!

Seventeen George Mason University students fulfilled part of their course requirements by taking a 5-night cruise from Miami to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands this past semester.

The course — TOUR 480: Cruise Ship Management — is taught by Professor Russ Brayley, division director in the School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism.

Students in the course are part of the Tourism and Events Management bachelor's degree program.

While on board the Carnival Victory, the students learned from ships officers and corporate representatives who conducted special workshops and behind-the-scenes tours. At ports of call, students enjoyed Jamaican bobsledding, ziplining, ecotourism events, cultural exhibits, swimming with stingrays, snorkeling, and shopping.

This was the second Cruise Ship Management special topics course offered by George Mason. The previous course in 2013 sailed out of Baltimore on the Carnival Pride to Florida and the Bahamas.

George Mason University students in TOUR 480 learned first-hand about cruise ship management on a Caribbean cruise to the Cayman Islands.

In addition to compelling courses such as TOUR 480, students in the School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism benefit from the requirement to complete at least one — and sometimes three — on-the-job internships. With a location just outside of Washington, D.C. and strong professional connections, the school is able to arrange some of the country’s most sought-after field experiences.

A fully online minor is also available. For details, visit the Mason Online site.
