The School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism (SRHT) offers exciting, career-ready majors in dynamic fields such as athletic training, tourism and events management, health and physical education, kinesiology, sport management, and recreation management. SRHT features renowned faculty, cutting-edge research, six laboratories and centers, and a diverse student body of more than 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students each year. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has partnered with George Mason University’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) to offer a tuition sharing program and a tuition discount program to help bachelor’s-credentialed teachers on the highest steps of the BA lanes earn their graduate bdegree at a reduced tuition rate.

In the FCPS Tuition Sharing program, CEHD provides 25% of the tuition/mandatory fees, with FCPS and the student each paying 50% of the remaining tuition/mandatory fee balance. In the FCPS Tuition Discount program, tuition/mandatory fees for courses within a CEHD degree program are discounted by 25% off the university’s official in-state tuition rate for eligible participants.

FCPS Master's Cohort Tuition Sharing ProgramMore Less

Eligibility

Together, FCPS and CEHD are offering greatly discounted master's degree programs to eligible teachers. FCPS bachelor’s-credentialed teachers on the highest steps of the BA lanes (BA, BA+15, and BA+30 (steps 19 and higher) are eligible provided they sign the FCPS Tuition Benefit Agreement. In this program CEHD provides 25% of the tuition/mandatory student fee, with FCPS and the student each paying 50% of the remaining tuition/mandatory student fee balance.

FCPS Tuition Benefit Agreement

Participants in this program have agreed to:

  • Enroll in one of CEHD's eligible Master’s degree programs as listed below:
    • Advanced Studies in Teaching and Learning
    • Blended and Online Learning in Schools
    • Designing Digital Learning in Schools
    • Early Childhood Education for Diverse Learners
    • Literacy Leadership for Diverse Schools
    • Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse and Exceptional Learners
    • Transformative Teaching
    • Education Leadership – Math Specialist Leader
    • Educational Psychology

    Please note, for courses taken outside the College of Education and Human Development, unless the courses are part of the degree program requirement, a scholarship will not be offered and students are responsible for tuition at the full approved rate.

  • Timely enroll, and complete in the prescribed sequence and without interruption or lapse, each course required by GMU for the program earning in each such course a final grade of "B" or better; and
  • Upon completion of the program: (a) participant commits to continued employment with FCPS in an instructional position for a period of not less than 3 school years following program completion; and (b) fulfills and completes the employment obligation described in (a) in compliance with FCPS's policies and procedures and Virginia licensing requirements.

Participant shall repay to FCPS all sums paid by FCPS to GMU in connection with participant's enrollment in the program within 60 days of notification by FCPS in the event:

  • Participant fails to receive the required grade in any course;
  • Participant withdraws from, or otherwise fails to complete, the program in accordance with GMU's regular schedule; or
  • Participant breaches or otherwise fails to fulfill for any reason the commitment of continued employment described above, in whole or in part.

Tuition Payment Allocation

Eligible FCPS teachers pay 37.5% of the total tuition/mandatory student fee. Please note that teachers in this program may not apply their FCPS tuition benefits to their portion of the tuition or fees.

  • CEHD pays 25% of tuition/mandatory student fee
  • FCPS pays 37.5% of tuition/mandatory student fee
  • Student pays 37.5% of tuition/mandatory student fee

Additional Fees

The fees listed below are the responsibility of the student.

  • Graduate New Student Fee (one time fee): $60.00
  • Third Party Billing Fee: $25.00/term
  • CEHD Course Fee: $20.00/credit
  • Distance Education Fee (applicable to sections beginning with DL): $35.00/credit
  • Contract Fee (only applicable to Mason Payment plan option): $25.00/semester or term

Steps for Enrolling in the FCPS Tuition Sharing Program

  1. Determine if you are eligible.
  2. Fill out and submit an admissions application for an approved CEHD degree program.
  3. Once your application is approved, activate your Patriot Pass account by selecting option #1 at Patriot Pass.
  4. Activate your MasonLive Microsoft account by selecting option #5 at Patriot Pass.
  5. Help us match your FCPS email address to your Mason ID by logging in at Match FCPS to Mason ID. This will help us process the CEHD and FCPS portions of your tuition and mandatory fees.
  6. Submit a FERPA form online at https://registrar.gmu.edu/forms/ so that Mason may share your grades with FCPS.
  7. Register for classes. Register early! Students need to register by the dates listed below on the Registration and Payment Schedule to allow time for Mason to process the FCPS and CEHD payments. Registration after the dates indicated will require the student to pay in full and then be reimbursed.
  8. Inform CEHD that you plan to enroll by logging in at the FCPS-Mason page with your Mason ID and then entering your FCPS email address. This helps CEHD match the FCPS email address with the Mason ID so that we can process your tuition/mandatory student fee payments.
  9. Students should pay the student tuition/mandatory fees and any other applicable fees online at the Student Account Center. Failure to make a payment on or before the due date is subject to 10%, up to $125, late payment fee.

Spring 2019 Registration & Payment Schedule

Please refer to the Student Accounts website for payment due dates. Spring 2019 payment is due on January 22, 2019. Registration on or after January 22, 2019 is due within 5 business days.

After Jan 30, 2019 Student pays full tuition and all fees and then submits a refund request for the CEHD and FCPS portions. A Late Registration Fee of $125 will be assessed to students who add their first class after the semester start.
