Teacher Licensure
Licensure Application Instructions
If you currently do not hold a valid VA teaching license and are not working with a VA school district, please provide the GMU Licensure Specialist with a completed licensure application packet which includes the following:
- Licensure Application Fee - $50 for VA residents, $75 dollars for out-of-state residents (check written out to The Treasurer of Virginia).
- Initial Licensure Application Form (http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/newvdoe/Application.pdf).
- Official Transcripts (from all universities attended INCLUDING GMU transcripts; must be in sealed envelope(s)).
- College Verification Form (complete part I only, but be sure that your full address is listed) (http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/newvdoe/Application.pdf).
- VRA scores. (Only required for Reading Specialist, Early Childhood Ed, Elementary Ed and Special Education; photo copies of official score reports can be accepted).
*Students MUST submit photocopies or original test score reports. The Licensure Specialist can not obtain these scores from other files on campus such as degree program files or internship files*
- Praxis II scores (if applicable; photo copies of official score reports can be accepted).

- VCLA scores (Required for ALL initial teacher licensure applicants as of Jan. 1, 2007; Does not apply to School Counseling and Ed Leadership; photo copies of official score reports can be accepted).
*Students MUST submit photocopies or original test score reports. The Licensure Specialist can not obtain these scores from other files on campus such as degree program files or internship files*
- Child Abuse Completion (Required for all applicants); Please visit the following web site, complete the free online module and print a copy of your certificate of completion. (http://www.vcu.edu/vissta/training/va_teachers/)
If you do currently hold a valid VA teaching license and are not currently working with at VA school district, please provide the GMU Licensure Specialist with the following:
- Addition of endorsement fee - $25 (checks written to The Treasurer of Virginia)
- A written memo to the VDOE requesting that the new endorsement be added to your current license.
- Official Transcripts (from GMU).
- College Verification Form (complete part I only, but be sure that your full address is listed).
- VRA scores (Only required for Reading Specialist, Early Childhood Ed, Elementary Ed and Special Education; photo copies of official score reports can be accepted).
*Students MUST submit photocopies or original test score reports. The Licensure Specialist can not obtain these scores from other files on campus such as degree program files or internship files*
If you are currently working with a VA school district, please provide the GMU Licensure Specialist with the following:
- College Verification Form (complete part I only, but be sure that your full address is listed).
The college verification form will be sent back to you. You will then submit the completed form and the other required licensure materials to your school district’s licensure representative. They will then submit the application on your behalf.
