Profile

Dr. Cozart is an Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Education at George Mason University. She is assigned to the Elementary Education program and is responsible for teaching the Introduction to Elementary Education course to the Partnership (PS) students as well as research in her field of study.

Dr. Cozart completed her PhD. in the Spring of 1999 from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her dissertation focused on five of the first generation of African American teachers to teach in desegregated schools in North Carolina and the influences of their histories on their pedagogies.

Prior to coming to Mason, Dr. Cozart spent four years on the faculty at the University of Maryland where she taught general education/social studies methods courses and continued to develop her research and writing agenda.

Dr. Cozart's research interests focus on the ways in which teachers negotiate their personal identities with their professional obligations in pursuit of equity pedagogies. She is also interested in the influence of her own identity on her qualitative studies.

Dr. Cozart has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education/ Psychology. She spent three years teaching in North Carolina's public schools.
