Jim Upperman is an Associate Professor in the Education Leadership Program at George Mason University. He teaches licensure classes in both the campus and cohort programs.
As a K-12 career educator in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Upperman devoted more than thirty years to instructional and leadership roles in the public schools. He was a high school foreign language educator, principal and school superintendent, and was named the Northern Virginia Superintendent of the Year in 2000.
Upperman has served as a keynote speaker and presenter in a variety of forums, and is currently providing professional development assistance in the supervision and evaluation of instruction to local school systems. He is also playing a key role in the design and delivery of the Northern Virginia Leadership Initiative. This initiative involves the delivery of modules on selected weekends to both aspiring leaders and current practitioners. The topics for modules have been selected by partnering school systems, who provide encouragement and support (sometimes including tuition payment) to those who enroll. Instructors for modules have included local school leaders, business professionals, university faculty from throughout the commonwealth, and education consultants.
