Dr. Bever is an Associate Professor in the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University. He is assigned to the School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism and is responsible for coursework involving: Safety, Emergency Care, and Testing and Measurement of Physical Fitness. Additionally, Dr. Bever is the Director of the National Center for Public Safety Fitness (www.lawfit.org). The mission of the Center is to provide health and fitness information and training for public safety personnel to include: Police Officers, Sheriff’s Deputies, Corrections Officers, Firefighters, Paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians, and Military Professionals. Dr. Bever is completing his 28th year at GMU.
Dr. Bever's research interests focus on the reduction of lost-worktime injuries and workers’ compensation claims in the public safety professions. The National Center for Public Safety Fitness web site (www.lawfit.org) provides an in-depth description of this research.
Additionally, Dr. Bever is the author of four editions of Safety: A Personal Focus (McGraw-Hill). Geared to university students, young professionals, and new parents, this textbook provides a wide array of hands-on experiential learning opportunities for the reader. It is currently used in over 200 universities across the Nation.
