March 24, 2015

Five students were selected by faculty members from the College of Education and Human Development to represent George Mason University at the 12th Annual Teachers of Promise Institute held in Richmond, Virginia, this past weekend.

The students were presented with medals and honored at the state-wide event as "Teachers of Promise."

Congratulations to the following outstanding students (pictured below, from left to right):

Five students and Associate Professor Seth Parsons represented George Mason University at the 12th Annual Teachers of Promise Institute in Richmond, Virginia.

The Teachers of Promise Institute is a two-day professional development event for students selected from among Virginia's 37 college and university schools of education. Its aim is to celebrate the prospective teachers' decision to teach, elevate the status of the teaching profession, and activate collaboration among promising teachers from throughout the Commonwealth.

"Encouraging high potential individuals to become teachers and supporting their work in the profession is one of the most important things we can do to impact K-12 student success," says Seth Parsons, associate professor in the Elementary Education and Literacy programs, who helps coordinate George Mason's presence at the annual event.

The students had the opportunity to participate in career preparation workshops, such as:

  • From College to Classroom: Smoothing Your Transition
  • The Sage on the Side: Transforming Your Classroom
  • Social Media Strategies #excite #connect @school
  • Survival in the City: Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships As the Keys to Success in Urban Education
  • Beg, Borrow & Steal: Using Your Life Experiences to Enrich Your Classroom
