Luanne Norden Receives Distance Education Award from George Mason University

Luanne Norden, an instructor in the School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism, is the recipient of the university's 2013 Distance Education Award for faculty.

The award is presented to a faculty member whose efforts support quality online course offerings. It is funded by George Mason University's Office of Distance Education and includes an award for $500.
Luanne Norden developed and teaches two distance education courses, Program Development and Resources in Health Education (HEAL 516), which meets the health methods requirement for teacher licensure in Virginia, and Personal Health (HEAL 110).
Ms. Norden is the coordinator of student teaching for the Health and Physical Education program in the School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism, part of the College of Education and Human Development. As one of her colleagues noted, "Truly well deserved. A genuine accolade to a colleague who puts forth great amounts of effort for student success."
The selection committee for the Distance Education Award took into account Ms. Norden's efforts to promote interactivity between students, instructor, and content; a course design that reflects best practices; and her efforts to provide students with clear expectations and ample forms of assessment; among other criteria.
Online courses are a particular focus of the College of Education and Human Development, which this fall launched four fully online master’s and graduate certificate programs, each with reduced tuition rates for out-of-state students.
The awards ceremony at which Ms. Norden will receive the award is scheduled for October 16, 2013 at 10 am in Dewberry Hall of the Johnson Center.
