Learning Technologies Wins National Award for Collaboration and Innovation

September 22, 2014

Congratulations to CEHD's Division of Learning Technologies, a recipient of the 2014 Learning! 100 Award. The award honors high-performance organizations that embrace collaboration and innovation.

Dr. Shahron Williams van Rooij (center) and Dr. Nada Dabbagh (right) accepted the 2014 Learning! 100 Award on behalf of CEHD's Division of Learning Technologies. Fellow award recipient, Daniel Bliton (left) is a 1997 graduate of the Instructional Design and Technology program and a learning strategist with Booz Allen Hamilton.

Nada Dabbagh, professor and division director, and Shahron Williams van Rooij, associate professor, attended the awards event at the Enterprise Learning! Conference in Anaheim, California. The Division of Learning Technologies was recognized by the editors of Elearning! magazine as one of the Top 100 Learning Organizations and was ranked #32 among the Top 40 public sector organizations.

Highlighted as an area of excellence by the award committee was the division's emphasis on collaboration. Dr. Dabbagh explained why this facet of the division caught the Elearning! Media Group's attention: "The Division of Learning Technologies' approach to academic programs is highly collaborative, demonstrated through student cohort structures, real-world project-based experiences, collaborative problem solving and teamwork, and partnerships with industry, schools, and communities at the local, regional, national, and international levels. We are also focused on using learning technologies to foster social presence, cognitive presence, and teaching presence."

The division, which is part of the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University, offers master's degrees and graduate certificates in both the Instructional Design and Technology program and the Learning Technologies in Schools program, as well as a PhD concentration in Learning Technologies Design Research. It is also home to the Center for Digital Media Innovation and Diversity.

Dr. Dabbagh noted that she is looking forward to the new relationships and educational opportunities that will grow out of this honor. She explained that the division is already in talks with the Defense Acquisition University (DAU) and the ELearning! Media Group to create a partnership for hosting an ELearning! symposium at George Mason University in the near future.
