Kim Kalthoff has been named George Mason University’s July Employee of the Month for her work as the assistant director of fiscal and administrative operations in the College of Education and Human Development. Having worked in a variety of roles in the Division of Special Education and disAbility Research and the Kellar Institute for Human disAbilities, Kalthoff has gained a reputation as a hardworking and invaluable resource to the university.

Friends and colleagues of Kim Kalthoff, including Dean Mark R. Ginsberg (left), gather at Merten Hall for the recognition ceremony.

Kalthoff received the award in President Cabrera’s office at its new location on the fifth floor of Merten Hall, formerly known as University Hall. The ceremony was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1. Kalthoff’s friends, family and co-workers were invited to attend.

“Kalthoff runs this show like a well-scripted play,” says Hillary Hamm, purchasing coordinator for the Kellar Institute. Despite Kalthoff switching positions in June, Hamm says things are running as smoothly as ever due to Kalthoff’s dedication. “She does not ever let any bumps or snags in the road stop her for any moment of time,” Hamm says. She also notes that Kalthoff is among the first to arrive and last to leave every day.

Dawn Phillips, grant and revenue administrator for the Division of Special Education and disAbility Research, says Kalthoff has always been a big help. “She tirelessly instructed me, supported me and assisted me in many ways,” Phillips says, adding that Kalthoff gets her nomination “hands-down” for her strong work ethic and enthusiasm.

Ala Showers, the coordinator for technology and funded programs for the division, says, “Kim is very bright and hardworking, and she is an exceptionally proactive employee.”

Kalthoff “has been truly invaluable,” Showers adds, because “she plays a role in everything we do to support the mission of the special education program.”

For the past two years, Kalthoff has worked with Francina Osoria, the building and travel coordinator for the division. Osoria says Kalthoff is inventive and consistently lives up to the many challenges of her new budget-focused role.

“It almost feels like nothing is impossible for her,” says Osoria.
