A recent issue of The Northern Virginia Times regional newspaper includes an article titled "Tourism Officials Seek Funding, Support" that features insights from Maggie Daniels, a professor in the School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism at George Mason University.

Dr. Daniels is the academic program coordinator for the Tourism and Events Management program within the College of Education and Human Development.

From the article:

Marketing and maintaining the industry takes work and skilled employees and that's where George Mason University comes in locally.

Maggie Daniels, the academic program coordinator for the Tourism and Events Management program at George Mason University, said it's not a widely-known fact, but GMU has a thriving tourism degree program.

One of the selling points for GMU's program, which she essentially developed, is that it's built on flexibility and collaboration with the local business community.

“We do not have that red tape,” she said. “We can make things happen quite quickly.”

That means if local businesses or tourism offices see a need for a particular class or course of study, her program can launch one.

She also encouraged business owners and tourism workers who have a master's degree to apply for an adjunct job teaching classes at the university. Those who don't want to commit to an entire class can volunteer as guest speakers or to host tours of their facilities.
