Four Outstanding Students Named Dean’s Scholars

Four outstanding students have been named Dean’s Scholars by the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University.

The program supports full-time doctoral students with a research assistantship that includes a stipend, tuition waiver, and university paid health insurance for up to four years. The awardees were selected from a total of 38 new doctoral students who will be entering the PhD in Education program in fall 2014.

 

Soo Ahn

Soo Ahn

Soo Ahn is currently a teacher in Fairfax County Public Schools, where she instructs students with emotional disabilities in math at the Burke Center. Soo holds a master’s degree in special education from George Mason University’s Graduate School of Education and a master’s degree in international studies/international cooperation from the Yonsei Graduate School of International Studies in Korea. She earned bachelor’s degrees in international relations and religion from the College of William and Mary. Soo’s specialization in the PhD in Education program will be in special education.

 

Akashi Kaul

Akashi Kaul

Akashi Kaul most recently worked as a Wharton Social Impact intern, where she was the chief learning officer of Rebel Ventures in Philadelphia, an after-school entrepreneurial venture of high school students whose mission was to promote healthy eating in the community. While there, she was involved in sales, marketing, and training requirements for sales staff. Prior employment includes working as a research intern, curriculum developer, and associate of communications and engagement in India. Akashi earned master’s degrees in international educational development from the University of Pennsylvania and in mass communication and journalism from Symbiosis International University in India. In addition, she earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Panjab University in India. Akashi’s program of study in the PhD in Education program will be in international education.

 

Kathleen Matson

Kathleen Matson

Kathleen Matson is interested in developing curriculum and instructional materials for high school and university students studying mathematics. She currently works at the Trinity School at Meadow View in Falls Church, Virginia where she teaches high school math and Protestant doctrine, and middle school science. Previous experience includes working in public finance initiating municipal bonds and as teaching director for Teen Community Bible Study in McLean, Virginia. Kathleen has a master’s degree in education from Marymount University and while there received the 2011 Academic Excellence Award. She has done course work toward a master’s degree in business administration at Northwestern University and holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science from North Park University. Kathleen’s area of specialization in the PhD in Education program will be in mathematics education leadership.

 

Sehyun Yun

Sehyun Yun

Sehyun Yun has been employed recently at Chosun University as well as Yuhan University in Korea where she conducted courses to prepare university students to take an international English proficiency test. She also volunteers as an interpreter and translator at the International Korean Adoptee Service, Inc. in Seoul. Sehyun taught English reading and listening courses as an adjunct professor at the University of Incheon in Korea, and she worked in Korea as a program coordinator at a summer English camp program for elementary students. Sehyun earned a master’s degree in teaching English to speakers of other languages from the University at Buffalo and a bachelor’s degree in home economics at the University of Incheon, Korea. She will enter the PhD in Education program in the early childhood education specialization this fall.
