Athletic Training Student Receives NATA Foundation Academic Scholarship

September 24, 2014

Scholarship recipient Cheryl Hairston is a senior in the Athletic Training Education program.

Congratulations to Cheryl Hairston, a senior in the Athletic Training and Education program (ATEP), who was selected to receive an academic scholarship from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Foundation. She is the first George Mason University undergraduate to receive this prestigious award.

A native of Dinwiddie, Virginia, Hairston explains that when she started researching potential professions as a high school senior, she wanted to find a career that would allow her to be hands-on and active. She came upon athletic training and knew right away that it was for her.

“Athletic training combines my love of helping people and my love of sports, and there are so many different things [you] can do as an athletic trainer that it’s almost impossible to get bored,” Hairston says. “I am very honored to receive this scholarship.”

The NATA Foundation requires that scholarship applicants attend a CAATE accredited program, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2, and have performed with distinction in their academic programs and institutions, athletic training duties and assignments, academic coursework, and community service.

Hairston currently serves as the vice president of the Mason Athletic Training Society and is a past secretary. She is a member of the Virginia Athletic Trainers' Association and the National Athletic Trainers' Association, as well as BEATS (Bolstering Excellence in Athletic Training Students), a mentoring program for ethnically diverse athletic training students created by Ms. Candace Parham, an instructor for ATEP.

The Athletic Training Education program is part of the School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism, one of two schools within the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University.
