Faculty News

Bill Brozo (wbrozo@gmu.edu) was in Macedonia for 10 days continuing his USAID project work as an International Reading Association consultant. Most of his time was spent in secondary vocational schools in two small cities near the Bulgarian border. He provided support to teachers who are training to become mentors of their colleagues who are implementing new, interactive teaching strategies in their classrooms.

Bill Brozo (wbrozo@gmu.edu) presented three papers at the annual convention of the International Reading Association in Chicago, April 30-May 4. The papers were titled "Using Assistive Technology to Mediate Content Literacy Strategies," "Helping Teachers Work with Adolescents," and "Helping Boys find Entry Points to Lifelong Reading: Book Clubs and Other Strategies for Struggling Adolescent Males."

Susan Bon (sbon@gmu.edu) and colleague Gerry LeTendre presented “The Impact of Court Rulings on School-Based Prevention: Appellate Circuits and Search & Surveillance” at the American Educational Research Association Annual Conference in San Francisco on April 8.

Susan Bon (sbon@gmu.edu) and colleagues W.G. Gerrick, D. Sullivan and C. Shea published “Ethical Leadership: A Case Study Framework” in Academic Exchange Quarterly, 10 (2).

David Bever (dbever@gmu.edu) had his research findings on the effectiveness of fitness programsin reducing workers' compensation costs and reducing law enforcement liability claims published in The 2006 Risk Management Yearbook. His article is titled "LawFit: A Job-Related Health and Fitness Program for Law Enforcement Personnel,"pp. 103-117.

Shuangbao Wang (swang3@gmu.edu) served as a reviewer panelist on “NSF Cyber Trust Panel on Network Architecture for Security” May 11-12 at the National Science Foundation in Arlington.
Julie Kidd (jkidd@gmu.edu) presented two papers co-authored with Robert Pasnak (rpasnak@gmu.edu) and graduate students Marinka Gadzichowski (kgadicho@gmu.edu), Debbie Gallington (dreimer@gmu.edu), Robin Saracina (rsaracin@gmu.edu), and Katy Addison (kaddison@gmu.edu) on April 28 and 29 at the Conference on Human Development in Louisville, KY. The papers were titled “Improving Early Abstract Thought Improves Kindergartners’ Achievement” and “A Two-Year Effort to Boost Kindergarten Achievement by Teaching Children to Think.”
Julie Kidd (jkidd@gmu.edu), Sylvia Sánchez (ssanche2@gmu.edu), and Eva Thorp (ethorp@gmu.edu) presented their paper “Opening Eyes, Minds, and Hearts to Promote Culturally Responsive Dispositions and Literacy Teaching Practices” on May 2 at the International Reading Association Convention in Chicago.
Layne Kalbfleisch (mkalbfle@gmu.edu) and faculty member Kevin McCabe, co-directors of Krasnow’s MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) brain imaging center, otherwise known as the Neuroimaging Core, are tasked with focusing the research experiments that will be performed using the new brain scanner. Layne’s
research efforts involve investigating the relationship between talent and disability. Her research subjects include adults and children with dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), autism, and Alzheimer's Disease.

Robert Baker (rbaker2@gmu.edu) presented a workshop with colleagues representing nine premier sport management programs throughout the country at the North American Society for Sport Management on June 2. The workshop was titled “A Discussion on ‘Millennials’:Teaching the Post-Modern Sport Management Student.

Candace Strawn (cstrawn@gmu.edu) spoke at a James Madison University Honors Seminar on "The Gendered Educational Backlash" on April 23.

David Anderson (danderso@gmu.edu) conducted a workshop on May 31 with Mason's Orientation Leaders regarding the Healthy Expectations and COMPASS program initiatives designed to promote healthy living with new students, and incorporated the use of the "Patriot Pulse" wireless decision software.

David Anderson (danderso@gmu.edu ) was a featured speaker at a news conference on the subject of data about underage drinking and its consequences on June 2 sponsored by the Safe Community Coalition and McLean High School. He addressed the impact of alcohol on the developing brain, focusing on short-term and long-term consequences.In attendance was Fairfax County Chief of Police David Rohrer and Jeff Levy, President of Virginia College Parents.

David Anderson (danderso@gmu.edu), Candace Parham (cparham@gmu.edu), Justin Lux (jlux2@gmu.edu), and Craig Wilkinson (cwilkin1@gmu.edu) ofthe Center for the Advancement of Public Health were recently notified that the Healthy Expectations program, which incorporates the COMPASS CD-ROM, was named as a model program by the U.S. Department of Education. One of four awardees, this designation results in funding for enhancements at Mason and its first-year students, as well as dissemination nationwide for replication and adaptation.

PhD Students

Sabrina Wesley-Nero (sabrinanero@hotmail.com) presented her doctoral dissertation proposal titled “A Study of the Effectiveness of Alternatively Licensed Urban Elementary Teachers of ELLs” on May 18. Committee members included Marjorie Hall-Haley (mhaley@gmu.edu), chairperson, Gary Galluzzo (ggalluzz@gmu.edu), and Joan Isenberg (jisenber@gmu.edu).

Iburia Hall-Haynes (haynesivh@aol.com) presented her doctoral dissertation proposal titled “Truancy and Truancy Interventions: Perceptions of Students and Teachers” on May 17. Committee members included Tom Scruggs (tscruggs@gmu.edu), chairperson, Margo Mastropieri (mmastrop@gmu.edu), and Rick Brigham (fbrigham@gmu.edu).

Gwenanne Salkind (gsalkind@gmu.edu), Math Education Leadership student, received the $500 Spikell Award in Mathematics Education for her essay on the use of virtual and physical manipulatives in mathematics teaching and learning. This award was established by Dr. Mark A. Spikell, Professor Emeritus, Mathematics Education at GMU.

Theresa Wills (twills@gmu.edu), Math Education Leadership student, received the $1000 ExxonMobil Math Specialist Excellence Award for her outstanding academic record in the Math Specialist Leadership Program. This award was established by Patrick Dexter of the ExxonMobil Corporation.

Grants/Proposals

David Anderson (danderso@gmu.edu) submitted a proposal titled “Evaluation of INOVA Juniper Program Services” to INOVA.

Gary Galluzzo (ggalluzz@gmu.edu) submitted a proposal titled “From Average to Excellent” to the Fairfax County Public Schools.

Jack Levy (jlevy@gmu.edu) received a new award titled “EDUC 600: Workshop in Education: Reading and Writing Strategies for English Language Learners” in the amount of $176,054.

Anastasia Samaras (asamaras@gmu.edu) received a new award titled “VADoED Career Switcher Program FY’06” in the amount of $7,000.

Layne Kalbfleisch (mkalbfle@gmu.edu) submitted a proposal titled “Neuroimaging Informatics Tools and Resources Clearinghouse” to the Department of Health and Human Services.
